I'm hoping one of you can help me figure this one out.
My laptop has been experiencing some random lock-ups and hangs for a couple seconds at a time... I only started to care when the problem started happening while playing games.
Long story short, I narrowed down my problem to my hard-drive. I tried everything from defragging to reformatting, but nothing seemed to fix the problem.
I ended up downloading a program called HD Tune just to check out my transfer rates. Here's the weird part; while HD Tune is running the benchmark, my PC operates completely fine. Once the benchmark stops, it goes back to intermittent micro-freezing.
So apparently my hard drive only wants to work while it is being watched by a benchmark program....
Run the seagate diagnostics dos version download from seagate website and check the health of the drive to see if the smart is tripped or something else is showing a failure.
Re: Strange Problem: Hard drive only operates properly while running diagnostics
Then the hard drive is ok and so is ram I would look in other area's for the lockup's during game play most likely is power issue not sure how the HD Tune plays into this but you now know its not hard drive issue. Defrag ? I guess others want to see all you system specs the power supply wattage, CPU type, Video Card etc. How many devices you have in the system ie hard drives cdrom's floppy etc to see what the overall power drain is.

6GB RAM (1333mhz); USB 2.0 Ports (3) RJ45 Ethernet IEEE 1394a (4-Pin) Port Audio-out Connectors (2) Audio-in/Microphone Jack Built-in Front Speakers (2)
500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive; Slot-loading Dual-Layer (DVD+/-RW)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 (1GB); 15.6" High-Definition Widescreen (900p); 6 cell battery
I copied and pasted that off of the sellers website, but its the exact same model I have. The power supply is external... I'm not sure what relevant information I can give you about it, though. It says Delta Electronics. Input: 100-240 volts - Output: 19.5V and 7.7A.... It's the adapter that came shipped with the laptop.
I appreciate you trying to help me out... if there's any more information I can give just let me know.
Thanks for the specs thats a lot of power! sorry I missed/forgot the fact it was a laptop. I assume its under warranty and has tech support with the vendor. I think Dell bought them correct? I guess the only real test is to try another hdd to see if the problem actually is resolved. its a strange one for sure. Anti virus is disabled when playing games ?
Re: Strange Problem: Hard drive only operates properly while running diagnostics
Yep, I've tried disabling processes and whatnot. And yes, Dell did buy out Alienware... If I can't find a solution for this soon I'll contact tech support and see if they can't hammer out the issue. If you think of anything else let me know.
