A couple of days ago my external HDD (Hitachi Touro Desk DX3 - 2TB) was failing a cyclic redundancy check. I did a bit of research and found the best way to fix this was by running "chkdsk G: /r". The issue is, part way through the check, there was a power cut at the point where it spends 20 hours getting past 10% on Stage 4 (yeah, I've run chkdsk's before, and they usually take ages on the 10%). In any case, when power was eventually restored, I booted up my PC and explorer.exe kept crashing whenever I tried to access my HDD. I can't seem to run a chkdsk on it now, it just freezes and refuses to start. I've tried using the HDD on my laptop, and I'm getting the same thing (Windows 7 in both cases).

I do also have Ubuntu available on my laptop, if that's any use. Ubuntu can see the drive, but it throws a "could not mount device" error when I try to access it.

If you need any more information from either operating system's toolset, please ask away.
Thanks in advance,

To extend upon the error thrown by Ubuntu, when I try to load it directly in Dolphin:
Code:
An error occurred while accessing 'Videos', the system responded: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.UnknownFailure: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error
Failed to read £UpCase, unexpected length (-1 != 131072). Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Imput/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details.

So is there anything I can do to save the data on the drive, or even get the drive working again? The stuff I have on it is nothing that couldn't be replaced (I keep backups of important stuff), it's just a hassle and there is a lot of it.
