Hi everyone, got this Toshiba 300Gb external hard drive and this morning it asked for a format when I plugged in into the pc.
Browsed for some info at the web and found an old thread in this forum that talks about using TestDisk? got no experience on this problem so I would appreciate any help for not loosing the data/formating the HD.
Thanks in advance!
Yes first thing at this point will to do is to test the Disk for any error and see if the utility can fix them. I would first backup everything off of the drive just in case
Hello loda, went through the link but got no support or downloadable tool for the HD: "Toshiba does not provide diagnostic tools for hard drives, currently."
Any other option to getting started? I went through the 'Disk Management' and found that the file system of the HD changed to RAW, were it supposed to be NTFS?
Any idea?
I have downloaded the utility (Windows Diagnostic Tool Ver. 1.12
(For IDE/ATA/SATA Hard Drives) ) and it runs and detects the HD but I cant select it to scan. It just appears like "Toshiba 3.5" - HDD" but cant do anything else about it..
Im trying to figure out if I did something wrong or if its the wrong tool?
Oh well! when I went through your last reply never thought it could work..!
Suddenly after getting this tool working my files are back on and got again the NTFS file system.
Big thanks and hope it will not occur again.
Chris
Backup all the information to another hard drive just in case if the problem does happen to come back
I would also run the test on the drive for diagnostics
glad it sorted it for you always check a drive from dos
