If you want to just erase and reinstall, then format will do that easily. If you want to completely erase it so someone can not retrieve your data (like you are going to sell the hard drive), then it is a much longer process and for that we recommend one of these two programs:

An excellent program you can use is :

Active-Kill-Disk-Hard-Drive-Eraser.

Dban is aanother (my choice) an excellent program for clean disk wiping:

Dban Complete Disk Eraser.

Both programs do take quite a bit of time while formatting is much quicker, but will not erase the disk clean like the two recommended programs.

Thanks. I found kill disk much faster than dban but i also had it on my hiren's boot cd but I couldn't seem to get it to work on my new HD, but he kill disk alone worked great. Thanks
