I have a complicated issue with one of my hard drives. On it, are all my games and programs (I have windows on an SSD separate). It is a WD 500GB from 2008.
A couple weeks ago my steam crashed so I restarted my comp and didn't think anything of it, but when the windows logo disappeared it was doing a hard drive check on the installations hard drive. It finished and didn't show any errors, forgot about it. Now today, it happened again. This time I went to my computer and saw that the installations hard dive wasn't being detected, so I immediately thought of hard drive failure. I restarted the comp but it's being detected in BIOS no problem, and it did the scan after the windows logo again. This time it made a file in the root of the harddrive called "bootsqm.dat". People seem to think it isn't anything and to delete it, which I do, and it causes the hard drive to disappear again. I restart it AGAIN and does the scan again and the file is there. Again.
So I'm leaving it there and I'm having no issues now, what's going on? Is this hard drive failure? Or is it something less serious because it's being detected in the BIOS? Oh and I've deleted and made new files on it to make sure I can still do that and there were no problems. I really need an answer, everywhere I go no one has any idea what could be the issue. I really don't want to order another hard drive, but if I must maybe you would have a recommendation?
Thanks but I was saying that it IS recognized when I restart it, but after awhile of my computer running my installation hard drive (the hard drive I'm having issues with) will stop being recognized randomly. Because my Windows is on the SSD the computer is still running fine when this happens.
Re: A Very Strange Issue With One of My Hard drives
My C drive is fine, it's the SSD I have windows on but the only hard drive having any issues is my installations hard drive (the 500gb WD). Thanks for the response though. Sorry for any confusion, it's hard to explain.
Re: A Very Strange Issue With One of My Hard drives
I did a quick scan and got this as a result:
Test Option: QUICK TEST
Model Number: WDC WD5000AAKS-65YGA0
Unit Serial Number: WD-WCAS81893590
Firmware Number: 12.01C02
Capacity: 500.11 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 4 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 65 (Error Log Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 4!
Re: A Very Strange Issue With One of My Hard drives
I'm using a drive for old backup that was repaired 2 years ago using WD diagnostics and it still works fine. I only use it though in a external drive that's not powered all the time. If your drive is a primary drive then yes back it up to be safe.
AMD Did it pass the tests ? Since I do DR every week my advice is tainted toward safety and not unnecessary risks. Most posters come here for free help and are cheap and don't want to spend a dime for a 50.00 drive but that's ok we are here to help best we can.
Re: A Very Strange Issue With One of My Hard drives
It passed the quick test, but failed the long test and was able to mark the bad sectors. There was not to many of them and they were near the middle and end of the disk so I got lucky. I still wouldn't use it for anything else but a external drive though.
Re: A Very Strange Issue With One of My Hard drives
Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
Model Number: WDC WD5000AAKS-65YGA0
Unit Serial Number: WD-WCAS81893590
Firmware Number: 12.01C02
Capacity: 500.11 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 08-Error was detected while repairing bad sectors.
I attempted to repair it once I had the option but that's what I got. Is it over?
