Re: 5900 vs 7200 whats the difference?

The first (5900) is one of the so called "Green" drives. These drives run at a lower RPM with the aim of lowering power consumption. This they do but the saving isn't dramatic. Green drives also tend to be quieter and run cooler. They also tend to be cheaper.

They downside is performance, but this too isn't major. Hard drive performance is only a part of overall system performance so it is difficult to say what this will mean to you. It depends a great deal on the applications you use. Don't read too much into the 6GB/S specification. This refers only to the interface speed and tells you nothing about the drives performance.

If the having the ultimate in performance is important a "green" drive is not for you. Otherwise it may not be a bad idea.
