I'm having some trouble assigning a drive letter to one of my 2TB drives. It was removed from a NAS (Netgear Stora), formatted to NTFS, and that's where I hit a wall.
Now there was two drives taken from the NAS, both identicle. One of them works fine and has been filled to capacity, but the second is refusing to cooperate. In disk management the drive is listed as formatted, but with no drive letter, when I attempt to assign one I get a message reading:
Code:
The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk management or restart the computer.
Rebooting does not solve the issue, nor does deleting and recreating the partition. Any info on what to do next is greatly appreciating.
Re: 2TB Eco Green - Cannot assing drive letter....
Odd, as one of drives is working, I wouldn't suspect a Windows issue.
Have you tested the drive to ensure it isn't faulty? You can test the disk using the drive manufacturers disk tools. Run the SMART, short, and long tests (whichever apply to that software/drive model). If any of the tests fail, the drive is faulty.
You could also use the drive manufacturers disk tools to partition and format the disk, then boot into Windows.

I think it was a driver issue, but it was only by chance I got the drive working. I stumbled onto a solution for drives that won't partition (Not the problem I had), and thought I'd give it a shot anyway. Under device manager I un-installed both 2TB drives and then scanned for new hardware, windows grabbed a driver fro windows update and since then both drives have been working flawlessly, if not a little better: Average file transfer speed for 700MB files has risen from 110MB/s to 125MB/s.
I noticed a lot of forum posts with the same problem I had around the web and none had solutions, so for anyone finding this via google follow these steps to try get the drive to work:
Code:
1) Right Click "My Computer" and select "Computer Management"
2) On the left, select "Device manager"
3) Expand the "Disk Drives" section
4) Right Click on the problem drive(s) (If you have more than one of the same drive and one works but the other does not, do this step for both) and select "Uninstall"
You may be prompted to reboot your computer after the last step, I did not as I suspected Windows may attempt to reinstall the old drivers
5) At the top of the list you will see the name of your computer (e.g. James-PC in my case), Right Click this and select "Scan for Hardware Changes"
6) Allow the computer to automatically search for (ensure an internet connection is available where possible) and install all necessary drivers
You should now, with any luck, be prompted to perform some actions with the drive. If it is already formatted you will be prompted to explore the drive, if not you will be prompted to format the drive. Be careful if prompted to format, if you have data on the drive this could be destroyed, if this is the case make a post on this forum asking about data recovery.
