Who makes the latest and best/easy to use SATA controller card and who has it in stock? I clicked the link in the sticky thread that redirects to newegg for the promise controller card and it says out of stock.
I went to CDW today and picked up an Addonics ADST114 SATA 4-port raid controller. Will this work with 1 hard drive? they told me it would. The instructions say to boot up in windows and install the software. I dont have a working HD that has windows, thats why I need the card. I hit F4 when prompted during boot up to get into the raid settings and the only option that is working is "low level format" Its formatting my new 1T HD right now. Is that going to do anything for me?
Raid normally needs a min of 2 drives for either RAID0 Stripe or RAID1 Mirror Did you need a SATA Raid controller or just a SATA Controller for a single drive ? Your original post wasn't very clear on what "exactly" your after but you purchased a RAID controller Also what make model is your hard drive ? Its hard to help without all the facts and details FYI
What Model is the drive ? I know or assume based on your post its Western Digital I have not seen any drive with a 32pin connector can you send a picture of the drive ? Or are you trying to tell me your motherboard only has an IDE connection which by the way is more than 32pin's
i dont know..... I just bought it 3 days ago at best buy, its a SATA connector. What did we use before the SATA? ATA??? the wide plastic plug with all the holes in it and when you looked at the back of the drive there was a bunch of gold plated pins sticking out. I thought that was a 32pin connector? IDE?
For starters provide me with the info I have asked for now 2 times! What is the EXACT MAKE and MODEL of the 1TB drive. I don't want to ASSUME anything !
Based on your second post you have it connected to a SATA RAID controller and your were formatting it. Did that work ? You "may" be able to get it to work with 1 drive just not sure.
All you need is a standard PCI SATA controller board nothing fancy no raid needed. however looking at CDW it seems most are raid and the one you want is PCI Express not the older PCI interface.
Your motherboard just has the IDE interface FYI. No Sata ports on it as you already know.
This should work off the IDE port Addonics SATA to IDE/ATAPI Converter
ITS A BRAND NEW SATA (SERIAL ATA) MY COMPUTER RUNS THE OLD IDE CABLES, ALL I WANT TO DO IS RUN THIS F'ING DRIVE IN MY DINOSAUR, I DONT WANT A RAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN YOU HELP ME OR NOT? THIS IS PRETTY SIMPLE IF YOU ASK ME. IF I NEED TO DRIVE BACK TO CDW AND PUNCH SOMEONE IN THE FACE FOR SELLING ME THE WRONG **** AGAIN, PLEASE SAY SO. LOST $1000 OVER THIS ALREADY.
Its 1T, its been formatting since 10:30am I dont know if its going to bring me to the next step, thats why I am asking........ at this point I think I am wasting my time with this card.
The other card CDW has is PCI express, will that work in the PCI slots my board has?
I set my computers up from scratch and use them for about 5 years. I dont keep up with all the current lingos and latest tech. I dont need the latest and greatest every 2 weeks. Sorry for my ignorance.
Do I need to exchange this card yes/no? if so, I will get in my car now. thanks
I thought I was helping you! The best advice is to go back to CDW and get an IDE drive the largest I know of is 500GB if they even still carry them anymore. I have seen many 250GB IDE drives at BestBuy
Ok the model number of your drive is ST310005N1A1AS-RK that helps a ton. The Baraccuda "family" could be any number of Seagate drives. I see your getting frustrated with my attempts to help you so I will stand down for now.
No PCI Express won't work in your motherboard. The last link in my post as an adapter that should work for your IDE connector to convert it to sata.
the largest IDE drives Best Buy has is 320 and its the same price as 1T... Id rather explore controller cards. I plan to build a new machine in a few months. Rather have the 1T.
The RAID/SATA card will work, as a RAID and as just a SATA controller. You did not need to do a Low Level Format on the HDD, a quick format would have sufficed. (this takes a really long time, so please be patient). Once the computer Setup (Bios) recognizes your card and your Drive (as it has or else you wouldn't be formatting now) Boot off of the Windows XP Disc. Since XP doesn't have native support for RAID/SATA controllers, you will probably need to install a driver from a Floppy disc copied from the install CD that came with the controller. or you can Slipstream it into your XP CD using nLIte.
Since you have an old computer and you don't keep up with all the lingo and the new stuff, you are going to have a tough time installing this controller and drive. A large IDE drive would have probably worked better for you.
