Hi,

Not quite simple at the title suggests unfortunately.

I've got a WD Passport external HDD.
Sometimes its ticking and sometimes not so I need to move my files from it.
Windows sometimes see the files but cant copy them to a new HDD even if its one word document it just hangs.

I have somewhat been able to see it in Computer management.
It doesnt always show, even in 'computer'

Windows says it needs checking for errors so I start the process then it hangs.
I've go onto PartedMagic to use CloneZilla and it hangs finding the connected HDD's.

Any help at all. There is only around 500mb on there I need to backup.

These are signs that the drive has failed or is in the process of Failing.
I would suggest making an Image of the drive and saving it on another drive using HDD RAW Copy Tool. Then you can scan the Image file and not the failing drive with any data recovery programs, like TestDisk. I have had the best luck with GetDataBack. You will need another drive of the same size or larger to restore your files to. You have a 50-50% chance of recovery.
If you cannot make an image file of the drive using any of the afore mentioned programs or Clonezilla, then try to access the drive using a Ubuntu Live CD. Be aware the more times you try to access a failing drive, the quicker it is going to fail.

Hi,

Thanks for your help. Testdisk can see the drive but it hangs in the process at 0.6% over 16 hours it's been going. So I tried Ubuntu and trying to open files. Whilst Ubuntu can again see the drive when trying to open it, it says a process is pending and it's been like that for ages.

I do have Get data, what's my options? Trying to format it then try and recover the files?

Geez no don't format it just make an image file and then scan the image file with recovery software is what Spunk suggested.

Format means Erase, So don't do that.
Instead of trying to recover your files from the Failing drive, make an Image file of the drive using any of the three suggested programs and then Run TestDisk on the IMAGE not the drive to try and recover your files.

Hi guys,

I've tried macrium reflect and the HDD raw copy tools and although they can see the drive during its process it fails.

I'm going to try clonezilla again tomorrow

If those tools can't help you, I'm afraid the only way to recover any files is to send it off to the very, very expensive Data Recovery Specialists

In rare instances I have seen EaseUs: Disk Copy
clone drives Acronis and Macrium would not clone though it takes longer than those products but will complete. You would need another hard drive at least the same size to try the clone.

HDD RAW Copy is not a Clone software like Clonezilla, Acronis, or Macrium, but designed to create an image from a failing HDD to run other recovery software on the image..
There is a Linux tool About DMDE (DM Disk Editor and Data Recovery Software) that is like RAW Copy but since you do not boot into Windows to use it, it by passes all of the Windows rules. I am not a Linux user though.
Certainly, try all of these programs, but if HDD RAW Copy can't make an image, then none of them will.
Be aware, the more programs used to scan the failing HDD, the more likely the drive will become inaccessible sooner then later.
