Question

Greetings to all,

I've an old IDE hard disk drive that I connected to my windows 10 PC via a IDE to USB adapter from Sharkoon. While the adapted seems to have been recognized, the HDD itself is not showing up. What can I do? I'll appreciate your advice and help. Thank you.

IDE especially depend on the controller to show the drive, you may have to go into control panel/computer management/storage then partition and format the drive before it will be recognized.

As Asked, put your ear on the drive while the computer is running, do you hear the drive spin up? or does it spin up and then spin down? Or do you hear a slight clicking or scraping sound. If it doesn't spin up, or any of the other scenarios, the drive has failed. If it is spinning but not in Windows, press the Windows key+X and choose Disk Management. Is the drive listed here? If it says the file system is Unallocated Space or the Disk # says Not Initialized, you would need to run Data Recovery software to recover the data.

Many thanks for your input. I'm afraid the HDD is dead as I'm not hearing it spinning at all. I may have to try another way to save the data.

if the Data is critical, then you can send the drive off to a Data Recovery Center who can open up the drive in a clean room and recover the data. This is usually too expensive for most people though.

Not exactly the same problem, but I've been using IDE printers with Win10; using USB-IEEE adapter, The printer oft seems not there until I unplug/replug the USB -sometimes several times- and then operation resumes. I k now, I should just get a USB printer, but I love those cast iron hp-III etc. Try it before you give up.
