hard drive won't read discs

My hard drive used to read discs but now it doesn't. I Put cd's in , my printer installation disc and neither opened automatically. I even tried changing the settings and It didnt work. can anyone help me fix this problem. I'm a college student and really need to get my printer installed. Thank you

OK, that's not a hard drive. A hard drive looks like this

(and like this https://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto...drive_Full.jpg when open - but that's something you should never do).
It's made of magnetic media and spins super, super-fast.

What you're talking about is an optical drive (just the general word to encompass CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, and more drives). Most look something like this

If you're on a desktop, replacing a dead one shouldn't be difficult at all, as they're so cheap today. Just search ebay for one (or even better get a burner). Laptop ones may or may not be expensive to replace, depending on the model of your laptop and how proprietary the slot of the optical drive is.
