My Western Digital MyBook 1.5 GB has recently stopped working. I spins for about 20 seconds, then stops. It is not recognized in windows explorer, but it is recognized in device manager and disk management.

Under disk management it says that it has 2047.35 GB unallocated space.
It also says the disk is unknown and not intitalized. When trying
to intitalize the drive, it says "The media is write protected".

I have tried swapping usb cables, running safe mode, and freezing it.

Any help would be amazing! Thanks!

try taking ownership

Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7 or Vista - How-To Geek

back up the registry

then

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

look for

storage device policies
select and highlight the key storage device policies
see if there is write protect
if there is
double click on write protect and set its value data as 0

There is no "storage device policies" under CurrentControlSet/Control.

My System

Go here and download the Enable USB Write file.

After doing this the key referred to in post #8 should be there.

Has this drive ever worked? You may have to open the enclosure and remove the drive to attach as a slave to see if you can salvage the data
