Today I was on the comp browsing the internet when I started to get error messages.

Code:
One or more IDE/SATA drives has stopped working.
All desktop items disappeared, nothing came up when I hit the start menu except solitare and the calculator i believe. Ctrl/alt/delete did not allow me to pull up task manager.

A program called windows 7 recovery came up, this is why I think it is spyware.

Windows 7 recovery listed the following errors:

Code:
Read time of HD Clusters-FAIL
38% of HD is unreadable
Problem detecting OS files
Bad sectors
Drive C initialize error
File Placement errors
RAM defrag errors
RAM temp 83C
Boot sector damaged
HD doesnt respond
Also when I go to computer>Local disk c:> it says no files found.

How does it boot up at all if the HD is messed up so bad.

I would suggest that you follow the malware removal steps in the link below.

It does appear that your have rogue malware on the PC.

I was trying to get opinions of whether it was a real hard drive failure or a virus.

It is definitely malware/virus related.

Well i transferred the hard drive to another computer. It appears in My Computer fine. However it still shows no files on the drive, but there is about 20gb of space used.

Have you had the virus removed yet?

If the files are still infected then this is most likely causing your issue.

well this morning i attempted to run the scans required for the cleanup process. I start GMER and it causes my computer to BSOD. on restart it says no operating system found. Has the virus corrupted my c:/ drive of this computer now..?

The only reason I can get this far is i have Ubuntu installed on an ISO CD so i booted into that.

All i really want to do is get the documents and pictures off of the two drives onto another drive so i can do clean installs.

I took this drive which will no longer boot to another computer and it says you must format drive before you can use it. But i know my old operating system is on there. GMER will not scan the drive because i am using 64bit winows 7
