Hi, I need help picking out a external drive.
One that will last up to 5 years
External Drive
2TB
Mostly for pictures, music, and videos.
Descent price range
Please and thank you.
I was looking at ones from WD and seagate but I could not find one with good ratings.
Their is no track record for 2TB drives yet they havent been out for 5 years to know if they last that long. The failures thus far say 5 years isn't realistic. Right now I would lower it to 3 years AND it all "depends" on how heavily how much its used powered on etc. In a Server ? Desktop ? your question is just to vague not enough info to base a decent response. My personal opinion is to swap out the drive at the 3 year mark if its used daily in a work environment.
Well actually it has to be a 1 tb hard drive sorry. And I was really thinking about seagate because I've heard so many positive things about them. But it's has to work as a sort of family drive. Like used every once in a while to back up pictures, videos and music. Not a server just a basic desktop.
OK well I own several Seagates myself work fine for me. I dislike the Ext Western Digital's due to the on-board hardware encryption that can come back to bite you during a failure. The biggest problem with the externals is how people handle them they fall over get dropped get yanked off tables etc. Just be careful with it and you should be fine. Its always good to have a backup on the cloud example (carbonite) as well its surely cheap enough these days just as a plan "b" not all your "eggs" in one basket idea.
There is no guarantee that a Hard Drive will last 5 years or 5 weeks. Everything electrical dies at some point. In 5 years, we will probably not be using SATA HDD's any more, they will be too slow and too small. IMHO Seagate drives are the most reliable.
I have one sitting on my desk on my computer works fine for me. If I followed reviews I would never buy anything too many like and dislike its a hard drive Seagate and Western Digital are the 2 largest producers these drives are in almost ALL computers enough said!
