Hi, I have a Dell XP system. i was running low on disc space so I bought the Iolo System Mechanic while waiting for the 2nd drive i ordered to show up.
The Iolo system installed OK, but once I ran the "fix", I started having all kinds of freeeze ups etc.
I uninstalled the Iolo software and now the system boots, but it randomly hangs whenever it wants to which means you really can't do anything on it.
I tried a restore point but it only goes back a week to pick restore points and this problems predates those restore points. It won't let me go backto August.
I am not sure where to start the troubleshooing, pls help.
On the HP, I just ran a scan using Malware Bytes and it did not turn up anything. It did 1 Windows update KB2616676, but would not do the update for the 2005 Express Edition of SP4 KB2463332.
Hi, Took me a while to dig up this information, more digging than I had done before:

I don't get blue screens on either one. They just randomly go on the hour glass and stop working or just freeze up for no apparant reason.
Thanks for your help and suggestions, what's next?
When the results are displayed the info is in an image you can see the yellow or red or green indicators you can save that as a complete html file and upload to a post. or use a screen capture program such has MWSNAP Mirek's Free Windows Software to grap an image of the results save as a jpg file and upload to a post
I think you need to run "chkdsk /r" on both hard drives frankly. You can do it from a cmd prompt and when prompted type in "Y" to agree to a run on restart and then restart.
Also did chkdsk on both:
Compaq - it said everything was OK
HP - I did not see the results before it restarted. If you want those results pls advise how to get them.
Pauliejr2, seems the hard drives are ok and not the source of the problem your currently having. Tracking down these types of problems is a process of elimination. Next you may want to post on the Virus/Trojan/Spyware forum to see if anything is lurking that may be causing the random hangs etc.
