I just have a simple question. If I have a virus, would it be likely for my virus to spread to an external harddrive if I plug it in, or are there virus's that target only external harddrives?

I'm not sure if this is the proper forum, but thanks anyways.

If the virus will propogate to a file type that is on the external drive, then it could get infected. To the OS and the virus there is little to no difference to teh hard drive based on it's connection. at the physical level, there is wuite a difference in how the communications takes place, but since most virii are running in the context of the OS, then yes your external could get infected. That being said, the most likely place is the internal drive, not because of it being internal but because that is where the OS registry and user profiles are stored.
