Are there sounds that an external hard drive might make that would not mean it was failing?
I always thought the noise I heard was just it working, but now I'm reading about clicking being a bad thing, but I went to a site that had recordings of failing hard drives and none of them sound like mine.
It's pretty quiet. It doesn't sound the same as the clicking I listened to on the recordings. Maybe more like grinding. It only happens when I am moving stuff onto the drive.
If the drives acoustic management is turned off you will hear what I usually describe as a loud 'purring' similar to a really happy cat. Not quite a grinding, almost a light rumble. Could that describe it?
For the cost of hard drives right now, especially if you have important info on it, I think I would get a replacement if I were you. Avoid a potential disaster while you still can. That being said, if it's always made this noise it may be normal. I can't really say without hearing it but it doesn't sound like it from your description.
the "click of death" in a hard drive is a loud obvious clicking sound and I doubt you are hearing that from what you describe. How old and what brand are you using?
Personally I think those are the worst so I would replace it with a Western Digital now.
