I installed a new Seagate external drive yesterday. Things went fine, device was recognized, and I transferrred some files to it. Today the drive has disappeared, not physically, but it does not appear on MY Computer or anywhere else. It's USB2 and it is powered up. Where do I start looking?

Here's what it says in the device manager: Windows cannot load the device driver because there is a duplicate driver already running in the system (code 42).

What next?

ok then

remove all reference to your external drive in the device manager, restart, then plug in your external and let xp find it and install it.

in your device manager, right click on the problem drive and choose remove or uninstall, what ever it says in that manner.
when you reboot, have the drive installed. [usb plugged in]

O.K., that fixed it. Thanks. I'll keep this in mind. Wonder what caused it to occur?
