What are the differences between an sata150 hard drive with 8 mb cache and 16 mb cache? Is there a major difference or is there practically no difference at all?

You will notice the difference when you access the same data consistantly. The drive buffer cache will normally transfer at the interface speed (150MB/s) compared to the disk to head speed of around 60MB/s.
