I am trying to recover data from my compaq presario V2000, I removed the hard drive and bought an external sleeve with a usb to connect it to my desktop, but the hard drive is a female connection and so is the external sleeve. Also, the hard drive has a 2-tier connection, which I have never seen before, what connector or adapter do I need to be able to make this work?
There is an adapter that is on the pins of the drive that can be removed (it should just pull off) The adapter is used to make it work with your computer.
There was an adapter on it, I was just afraid that if I removed it I might break something, but the pins are now recessed to the point I cannot connect them to either of the adapters I have for my drive.
I have everything hooked up correctly now, yet when I plug the USB into my desktop, it recognizes the USB storage device in my device manager, but I do not have a new hard drive on my list of available drives, and so I still cannot access my old data from my laptop's hard drive. Am I still doing something wrong?
Go to Start/Search and type diskmgmt.msc Right click the diskmgmt icon in the search results and Run As Administrator. In Disk Management do you see your now external drive? Does it say that it is Unallocated Space? Which would mean the file system is jacked up. Also, follow Jacks suggestion, does the drive power up (spin up) do you hear it clicking? If its not spinning up or it's clicking, the drive has failed.
I did as you suggested, and it said the drive needed to be initialized, and when I tried to initialize it it gave me 2 options to choose from, and both options resulted in an error message saying the drive is not ready for initializing. The drive does not spin or make any sounds at all when plugged in either. I am hoping this does not mean it is dead, b/c I have pictures and videos I would very much like to have back stored on there
also there are 4 pins not being used on the left side when I plug in the USB adapter from my hard drive to my computer. I read somewhere that they are used as a power source, and am hoping that might be why the drive isn't spinning. Those 4 pins bring the total of pins on my drive up to 48. I really appreciate your help in this, as I would be completely lost without it
Make sure you have the adapter plugged in correctly. (the USB cable part points away from the drive, not towards the 4 pin). A 2.5" Laptop drive should not need external power. If it doesn't spin up though, the drive is dead.
