Computer not detecting Hard Drive at all

I have an old Toshiba Satellite A215 which has pretty much been a paperweight for a while here. :sigh: I finally got around to trying to fix it and everything was wiped. At first it's telling me that there's no Operating System and then when it tries to install one (Windows Vista) it says it can't find a hard drive to install it on. Help would be greatly appreciated.

If you boot with an Ubuntu LIVE CD does it recognize the drive?
Are you attempting to install from a Vista CD or from a partition on the drive?
If I was working on it I would connect just the hard drive to a secondary computer using a SATA to USB adapter then see what the health of the drive is.
Depending on the manufacturer of the drive there are testing utilities available from download that can test the health of the drive from a CD that you burn.
