My friend is selling his e-machines 3240 desktop on ebay so asked me if i could wipe his hard drive before selling it on. I did this thinking that since xp was put onto the pc before purchace it would be in a segmented part of the hard drive an hence wouldnt get wiped. No such luck!! I spoke to the support guys at e-machines who were very reluctant to help and just said use the recovery disk- despite the fact it was never sold with one.

Does anybody know how i can get xp back on it for him or where abouts i can get a free copy of the recovery disk? As searching on google hasnt come back with any good results!!

Thanks People!!

if you have formatted the hard drive, the recovery disk wont work i dont think, you need a fresh installation of Xp with a serial. thats the only legal way of doing it

It depends on the type of recovery disk supplied - or supposedly supplied. Some vendors use an HPA to hold the Setup files, others ship a series of CDs that have all the files and drivers and assorted blaotware vendors install. The best bet is to order another recovery disk from E-Machines. At the very least You can use the OEM Licensee Key that is on the case of the machine on the COA ( Certificate of Authenticity ) or that was on the EULA package for WinXP that shipped with the machine and any OEM Windows disk. You will probably need to track down the appropriate drivers if you do it this way however.

Just got back from the technical support bit again at e-machines, they say there "hands are tied" since the computer is older than a year old they are under no obligation to do anything about it an hence will not be supplying a recovery disk. Despite the fact i told them that they never supplied one with it!!

Check with your friends to see if any of them have an OEM install cd that matches your sticker ( Home, Pro, MCE ) . . if so, you should be able to install using the proiduct key on the side of the tower

you must use the same version for which your 25 digit serial code is for on the side of the machine .............

if you had win xp home ............ then download the win xp home ISO image

then burn the image to a CD with an ISO burner

Thanks for your help, ive put it onto the pc making sure i downloaded the xp home edition (english) and it all works fine untill you enter the product key which it just keeps saying is invalid despite the fact that i have tripple checked that the number matches the sticker on the back. Could this have anything to do with the fact that i havent used the official e-machines recovery disk?? And is there a site where i could download one just like with the xp?

you will need to call e-machines tec support to answer that one ? if your product key is a legit one then you should have no problem installing ?

shouldnt need anything else

Look there and see if there is one that says OEM.... Just klooked try the one that is VL CD or says Volume. OEM keys are technically a volume license so they may have just used that as the tag.

its not illegal (against the terms of the Microsoft EULA) to try an oem cd from a friend as long as the version matches......

I would also try redownloading the XP home file .......... and reburn it ............. you may have gotten a bad burn
