I'm installing a new hard drive in my parents old system. The only problem is that I ordered a SATA not knowing it. I ordered a SATA PCI controller card, but I can't ever get it through the BIOS. Is my parents system too old to support this?

Intel III Processor 800 Mhz, 133FSB
store bought, manufactured by HP

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

What exactly is it doing? Is it hanging in the BIOS?

Well, the internal speaker makes a double post, then after reading the mouse, keyboard, cd drives and everything else, it says

Error
Expansion ROM not initialized - PCI Mass Storage Controller in Slot 02 (where I put the controller card)
Bus:01, Device:09, Function:00

Press <F1> to setup, <F2> to resume

I've looked all over the BIOS for something to switch on or load the driver for this card and there is nothing I can do. Which leads me to believe my parents computer is too old to deal with this crap.

It's not that old. It still should work. Have you tried a different PCI slot?

I actually took a 56k modem out of that slot, so nothing should be wrong with the actual slot. I couldn't get it into slot 4 so I switched the two.

My System

I believe you are going to have to unistall the modem program and drivers (add remove programs console) so the system will free up the resources currently being 'reserved" for the modem which isnt even in that slot /

give that a try then post back with your findings

regards

joe

Ok, From the looks of this you need to setup the HDD in the controllers BIOS. This is where the "Press <F1> to setup" comes in.
What OS are you running?

Windows XP Pro. Windows ME was originally on the system, but the BIOS only displays 98 and 2000. Maybe I should update the BIOS for the OS?

If you are installing a fresh install of WinXP you will need to install the drivers for the SATA controller at the F6 prompt. Otherwise the OS cannot see the HDD.
