My laptop crashed. the files are still on the HD but it just wont load the OS or recovery. So, is there a way I can get the old files onto a external drive?

Sounds like what you need to do is to remove the hard drive from the laptop, then connect it internally to a desktop, see if it can read it. If so, copy the files out to another drive. You could also connect the drive to another computer using an external enclosure, then read the files by usb, firewire, or e-sata, depends on what the laptop drive interface is.
The optimal method is to connect internally to a desktop. Using the native method of access gives the greatest chance of success,
Of course, the laptop's drive needs to be a working drive, if the drive itself is hosed, then it's not going to work, but if it spins up, you may be able to get the data with recovery software.
