I built a home server with a 1TB hard drive. It runs a Linux distro. I want to find a backup method. I don't have any external hard drives or a NAS system. I was wondering if it is just as good to put another internal hard drive in and backup to it. Is that common to backup to another internal hard drive inside the same computer? Thanks
Yes, that would work as well. the only advantage of an external is that you can remove it from the site and keep it stored in case of catastrophe (Fire, Tornado, Quake etc).
I'd add that the disadvantage of that is if something really terrible happens with the power supply, it may fry both the original and backup disks. But that happens really seldom.
Also, if your computer falls, both the disks may be damaged, etc.
