Hello I'm new here, and I have recently acquired a fascination with my computer, but I have no formal training, so please forgive my ignorance even if it offensive :)

My question is concerning an upgrade from Xp Pro (32 bit) to Windows 7 Pro (64 bit). I am concerned with hardware compatibility. Right now I am running a custom built PC with a AMD Sempron 3400+ (WD Caviar Blue 160 GB SATA Hard Drives ( WD1600AAJS)) and a MCP6P M2+ Ver. 6.x Motherboard made by BioStar.

(Socket AM2+/AM2, Supports AMD Phenom II/Phenom/Athlon 64 X2/64/FX/Sempron Processors, Hyper Transport Technology up to 2G, Supports AMD Cool'n'Quiet Technology
It is recommended to use 95w CPU)

After some brief research, it seems both my CPU and motherboard are cheap older models, so my question is do I need to replace my CPU or my motherboard or both to properly run Windows 7 Pro?

I would not try to run win7 with your existing cpu / win 7 does alot of "stuff" in the backgound which the user is not aware of thats one of the things that makes win 7 faster BUT its a resource hog as a result your motherboard is ok but a cpu upgrade is certainly in order (something like the Phenom II 945 or 955 would do the trick) then win 7

The upgrade advisor for Windows 7 says everything is fine except I need a little more Ram and my CPU won’t support XP mode. I think you are correct though -- would be like putting a silk hat on a pig to run Windows 7 with this third rate CPU, even if it is technically compatible. Can I install the new CPU myself? Is it tricky to install a CPU? Any good video walkthroughs?
(I included my Update report so you could confirm your advice for the need for a new CPU, if you wanted)

The Phenom II X4 940 is not supported (125W Thermal Design)

You can get a list of supported CPU's from the link below:

MCP6P M2+ :: Motherboard :: BIOSTAR

I agree the x945, x955 would be a nice choice.

Hey guys, I descided to just buy a new laptop instead of upgrading my old system, but I have a problem. I recently purchased this laptop:

HP ProBook 4730s (LJ477UT#ABA) Notebook Intel Core i5 2410M(2.30GHz) 17.3" 4GB Memory DDR3 1333 500GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi AMD Radeon HD 6490M

But tonight I went to the HP website and saw that this model has been discontinued. I thought this was concerning since the model is very new.

I called tech support to ask why, and they told me it was because the models with the large screens- 17.3"- were not selling, and there was nothing functionally wrong with the model. Thats funny, since one of the reasons i bought the thing was for the big screen.

So my question is (and I should have asked this question before I bought the laptop) do you guys know anything about the HP Probooks? Does this model have known problems? Any advice or input is welcome. I was looking for a fast laptop running Windows 7 Pro/ with a big screen with kickass security under $900.00. Is there a better option than the Probook?

My advice for any laptop is buy as cheap as you can, $500 max and preferably in the $300 to $400 range, so when the problems start you can replace it.
You already have the HP so why not use it?
