Hi all,

In these times of penny pinching, I am looking to upgrade my desktop ( Dell Dimension series ) even further opposed to buying new.

I have recently added another hard drive to increase to 120GB ( 80/40 ), increased memory to 1GB, plus added a DVD/CD RW drive.

My next task will be to upgrade the processor. Currently running 1.6ghz processor ( Intel pentium 4 ) but was wondering if increasing this to 2.2ghz would be of any benefit and/or would it enable me to increase memory further if changed?

I have a an AMD semperon processor available but not sure if this could be fitted.

Would appreciate your comment on this before I go ahead & change CPU.

If you need any further info, please let me know.

Thanks.

You'll need another Intel CPU if you don't want to also upgrade the board.

Ok, that's not a problem.

My current processor is 1.6Ghz, 400mhz sys bus, 256kb Cache, family F, model 1.

But can I add any Intel processor ( 2.5ghz, 800mhz, 1Mb cache ) or do I have to stick with Pentium family? Will increasing processor from 1.6 to 2.5 be of any benefit? I don't play games on my PC but will want to run window 7at some point. Will this also allow me to upgrade memory further?

I am now at my max ( 1GB ) with current processor.

Are there any sites I can use to look for best option?

Sorry about all the questions but this processor stuff is all new to me.

Thanks for your help.

I cannot advise you on a cpu upgrade, but the 1 GB limit on memory is usually a factor of the motherboard, not the cpu. Your best bet may be to contact Dell to ask what processors are supported by your board.
