There's a square patch of gray thermal paste at the base of my cpu's heatsink. I read that I should scrape this off and clean any residue with 70% alcohol and then replace it with my own high quality thermal paste.

Is this true?
Why is the stock paste not good enough?
Will I still be able to OC with stock paste
What brand of paste would you guys recommend should I choose to substitute my own?

Thanks a whole bunch! :)

I always use the pre-applied paste and have never had a problem.

One last question if you guys don't mind:

Should I get an aftermarket cooler, if not now, then when my warranty runs out? (I hear getting one voids your warranty)

Hi, I recently assembled a new PC, and today I decided to apply new thermal paste to my CPU; a Core i5-2500k, with the new thermal paste being Arctic Silver 5. The recommended method for me to install my thermal paste, as per the Arctic Silver website, was to use the vertical line method. I...

Thermal paste
Hi, I was cleaning out my PC case yesterday, and lifted up the CPU heatsink. The paste is 2 and a half years old and all dry and crumbly, so I plan on getting some new. Am I ok to run this PC meanwhile - CPUID Hardware monitor reports the temp to be 40c, which sounds ok to me?

New thermal paste higher temp?
I took off my cards heatsink and cleaned off the old thermal paste and applied new stuff. However I notice that the card temp went up when idling. Used to idle around 48C and now it idles around 52C. I was very precise about doing it. Only added a tiny dab and spreaded it around with a card and...
