Question

I have Asus P5GDC-V deluxe motherboard and I intend to upgrade RAM from DDR 400 to DDR2 533 modules. I want to know what is better : to put one 1G module or two times 512M? Are they have to be "in pair"?

This MB uses Dual Channel Memory configuration. It is best to install memory in pairs (Dual Channel kit).

Do you say that with one module only it won't work?

It will work in single channel mode with a single stick of memory but you will not have the benefits of a dual channel setup. On a dual channel memory setup the CPU will address both memory channels at once. Therefore increasing the overall memory bandwidth.
If you just install a single stick of memory with the intentions of buying another stick later on for dual channel, this may not work because the memory needs to be a matching pair.
