i have a pavilion 514n with an Intel Celeron 2.2 GHz which said to be upgradable but i don't know what to upgrade it to. i want to upgrade it to today's cpu models and speed. i would expect a memory upgrade as a cpu requirement. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yours is a socket 478 which means you can upgrade processor which is either celeron or pentium 4 at best and some dual core. Most dual core now uses LGA775 socket.

If you can't find a dual core which uses 478, you will need to change your motherboard to a socket 775, change your RAM to DDR2 n off course your CPU

A word of caution first As with any OEM system your board will only support a CPU that the OEM Bios will support OEM's are not in the habit of upgrading the Bios for more CPU support after they have stopped using the board. with that being said I this is the best candidate for your board I would first download and install the latest Bios from HP before starting to change the CPU. And be aware that without manufacture support sometimes these swaps can turn into trial and error experiments.

Also I know of no dual core socket 478 chips.
