We have a PC in our office which we can't work out. If you put the XP CD into the drive, you can load into the Windows Setup without any problem, (although on one occasion it reported "error (0) occured at line 1768) so we go through and install windows, it all loads fine, until you restart the machine. It will start to boot as normal, but then just before the Windows XP logo should appear, it just hangs on a black screen. The only way out of this is to push reset, but then when it next boots up, you have a menu asking which type of startup you wish to use (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last Known Good Configuration etc)

Last Known Good Configuration - as soon as you press enter, the machine freezes
Safe Mode - Sometimes allows access to Windows, other times stops when loading mup.dll
Start Windows Normally - The same black screen hangup.

It has a brand new 80Gb Hard disk, but I'm unsure of the rest of the components.

try doing the chkdsk from the Recovery Console

chkdsk /r

To start the Windows Recovery Console, use any of the following methods:
Start your computer by using the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press R to repair, and start the Windows Recovery Console.
