I have a Intel Pentium 4 540J 3.3ghz

A friend sold me a
Intel Core™2 Duo E6600, 2.4 GHz E6600 (BX805576600)
for £50, Heard was good for overclocking.

My System
Gigabyte GA-N680SLI-DQ6
4gb RAm
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS
Vista Home Premium

Was just wondering what difference this will make to my machine
Playing games such as
Age of Conan
Farcry 2 [Played at maximum but was struggle sometimes]
Fallout 3
Empier total war

Thanks for the help.

I don't recommend or endorse overclocking, but the new CPU will be a significant step up from a P4.

you better get a seatbelt ! >>>>> that 8800GTS is gonna feel some spurs in its ribs for the first time too!

and the E6600 will overclock nicely too; with a decent aftermarket cpu heatsink

dotn forget to update your motherboard bios prior to installing the E6600

No need to void the CPU warranty by OC'ing. It should be capable of playing games at stock speeds.

with the conroe era cpu's; you really have to "work @ it" to destroy a cpu! its not like the old ones (p4-prescott and Pentium-D; they were on fire at stock speeds!)

I would not & "do not" hestitate to overclock by 15-20% without any fear as long as your other system parts and cpu cooler are good quality

you have the potential for a real gaming rig; drop the hammer man!

economy ram which is rated for 1.8-1.9 volts isnt going to get you very far overclocking; decent ram for overclocking will allow you to boost the ram voltage as need up to 2.1-2.2 volts

also your power supply is not a quality enough power supply unit to take the stress

you could maybe get 10-15% increase but I advise you dont try above that with your current set-up
