My Presario X1000 laptop suddenly shut off and when I tried to turn it on, the LED lights would light up, but nothing would run and the screen wouldn't work. So I took it in to CompUSA and they said it was the motherboard, and would cost $734 to get a new one. I paid $30 to get my hard drive into an enclosure so I could access it w/ a temporary computer, but what should I do? Pay for that motherboard and have them install it? Shop online and get a cheaper motherboard and then purchase an extended warranty? Buy a new computer? This one is about 2.5 yrs old. Thanks

My opinion is that a laptop is not worth the price of the repairs, and that you should spend the money you would on repairing it by getting a new one.

There are some very good laptops out there that aren't that expensive, for just a bit more than it would cost to repair your old one, you could get a new one.

thanks for the replies guys. i saw on craigslist used motherboards for my computer are being sold for $300. Does that change anything? Maybe I should just do that and invest in an extended warranty through HP/Compaq. So total, that would run me like $500. Or I could get a new laptop for $1000 w/ extended warranty. Thoughts?
