Confused

A family member has come to me with a problem, she was trying to plug something into the usb port on the front of the pc and damaged the usb port. Now the pc is dead and wont power on, when plugged in the led light at the front turns on but when the power button is pressed nothing happens. Any suggestions????

Hello and welcome to the TSF, you should be able to disconnect the front usb ports from the motherboard connections....do that, and cross your fingers that nothing on the mobo got fried.

hey thanks for replying I disconnected the usb ports and tried again but still nothing. Could it possibly be a psu problem there is a LED light on, on the motherboard as well as the front of the case but thats the only sign of life at the moment

It could be several things, but first thing would be to unplug the power cord and reset the cmos. Either by removing the small round battery on the motherboard for about 10 minutes or by moving the cmos jumper. Which ever is easier for you, but be sure to get the jumper back in the correct position. Then try to boot, if it succeeds go into the bios and reset to optimal default settings. Mike

Pay attention to get the battery back in the same way too.

Follow the link below for bench testing the system and see if you can get it to work again......it is not uncommon however for a shorted usb port to fry the mobo and psu

A friend of mine had this problem and it took us ages to trace the fault, it tuned out to be both his usb keyboard and usb mouse, both had been damaged somehow when the usb socket shorted out.
