I have a Lenovo Ideapad z580 that will only read a 2g signal from my netgear router. My hp laptop reads the full 5g signal. will a software upgrade fix this or can I get a new wireless card to get the faster signal. OS Is windows 7

You could try downloading and installing the newest drivers from the Lenovo support site

When you say "will only read a 2g signal from my netgear router" . . what exactly do you mean?

That laptop only has a 2.4GHz wireless adapter. To use 5 GHz, you will need to add a 5 GHz adapter or dual band adapter.

USB dual band adapters are available.
