Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Devices are:
1394 Connetor
Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
Netgear WG8111v2 54Mbps Wireless USB v2.0

None have any problems; no Red X nor yellow ? or !.

If you have tested the cable and the router port with another machine and been successful, I can only assume that while you have drivers loaded, they may be the incorrect drivers for your wired NIC.

That was my conclusion. I checked the Dell website and ran SIW against the machine to detect the installed NIC. All indications are the card is a broadcom 440.

Any suggestion as to how to verify the card short of tearing into the machine?

Try SIW (System Information Windows) and see what it says about your NIC.
