NIC Activity LED blinking when PC is in sleep mode

I'm curious as to why my PC's built in NIC is active when the PC is in sleep mode. My understanding was that while the PC is in sleep mode nothing should be going on. I can see the NIC's activity LED blinking as if there's network aftivity. It's constant blinking too.

Which LED is blinking, the green (RX) one or the amber one (TX)?
