How long can Ethernet cable run before you start having dropout problems?

If there's a limit than are there some sort of signal boosters that you can buy?

How reliable are Ethernet cable couplers?

100 meters max. I'm only going about 75 feet. I have 2 CAT5E inline couplers along the way. It's strange because after the first coupler I have no internet connection. I connect a short CAT5E patch cable to my laptop. No Internet. I swapped out another coupler. Still no Internet connection. Very strange. When i connect my laptop directly after the first cable from the router I have an Internet connection. I highly doubt that I have 2 dead inline couplers. Must be something else.

UPDATE: I think it's something to do with the fact that my couplers were CAT5E. I swapped in just some couplers (presumably CAT5) and everything is now working fine.

I suspect that CAT5E couplers are not compatible with CAT5 cables.
