I am about to return to the UK after a couple of years away and will be accessing the Internet via BT Internet. I'm afraid there is no Infinity in the Shire where I live!!! So top internet speed will be about 4Mbps. As for the LAN the new BT Home Hub sports Gigabit Ethernet. BT Home Hub 3 specifications | Expert Reviews
All of my current Network Hardware is getting very dated and restricted in certain areas to 54Mbps wired what I want to do is to update everything to ensure I get the most out of my Network (Gigabit) so I need a bit of advice on Network Hardware.
I have a NAS, Apple TV2, Panasonic Vera TV and Blue Ray Home Cinema System, Macbook Pro 2008, iMac 2008, and a new ish PC with 1 Gigabit Ethernet port.
My LAN will be a mix of Wired and Wifi and I want each to be a fast as poss unless it gets too costly of course.
The Router will be upstairs where the iMac will also be located so the iMac will be connected via an Ethernet patch cable. The rest of the hardware will be located elsewhere around the property and I wont be able to have Ethernet cables running through the house (Well at least not until I re-do the lounge and dining room in a year or so's time, so I will probably have to use Powerlines?
I will need a four port switch for my Home Cinema Setup (Panny TV and Blu Ray DVD Player), Apple TV and HTPC all located in the lounge.
An I will need a four or 8 port switch in my workshop located in my garage (aprox 50 meters at the bottom of the garden).
Do I need to ensure that everything is Gigabit capable or there abouts.
Any advice on recommended products and manufacturers would be a help.
