My girl has a business account with verizon for her restaurant...which she recently closed...and we just had the service transferred to her home office and the speed just went to absolute garbage! Verizon is of course no help and I get the typical run around...

She also has an unlimited data (thankfully grandfathered in!) for a mobile hotspot option vs her cell service plan she has with them for her smartphone...I've attached the speed test screenshots for that compared to the wifi and ethernet hardwired speeds of our new 'high speed' internet service...

The cell phone hotspot is 41mbps/18mbps download/upload speeds...where my 'high speed' service i just had transferred here is only .95/.38 on my wifi connection and .83/.38 when connected via hard line ethernet (which seems strange it would be stronger via wifi vs hardline)

How are the signal levels? We are talking about wireless service here, so it's likely a signal issue.

The speed test difference wired/wireless that you noted doesn't mean anything. The speeds are so close that it's likely just a difference in the connection itself and not indicative of a wired/wifi issue.

Thanks JimE...what do you mean about signal levels?

I'm a total newb when it comes to this stuff so it's all Greek to me...I'm a search engine geek, but hardware/software/networks is another world. I always assumed a hardline is going to be faster/stronger than a wireless?

What else/how else do I need to diagnose this?

Thanks again

A few terms to clarify here:

1) wifi = connection between a PC/device to a home network (ie: connection to router and the router is connected to a modem and the ISP).
2) wireless = cell phone signal
3) wired = ethernet connection (ie: cable connection directly to the switch/router)

In the scenario above, the wifi and wired connection speeds are about the same. So it's safe to assume the connection to the router is good and any slowness is from the router to the ISP.

Which brings us to the connection to the ISP. You stated the ISP connection is a Verizon (hot spot), which is a wireless connection. The speed testing that you've done would seem to indicate the issue lies with this connectivity. The signal could be low, thus the modem (hot spot) isn't establishing a signal strong enough to go any faster (like when you are out and your cell only has 3G service and webpages load like molasses in the winter as opposed to 4G when they open instantly). Or another issue such as you've reached your data limit and the speed is reduced.
