I've looked everywhere for a reference and can't find one.

I need the short directory name for the long name,

C:/Blah Blah Blah/And so forth/abcde-1.2.34-blah/

So far I got

C:/BLAHBL~1/ANDSOF~1/

And applying that to a "cd" will get me my directory. But "abcde-1.2.34-blah" has got me stumped.

Well, here is something peculiar.

I tried that,

C:\BLAHBL~1\ANDSOF~1\abcde-~1

and it didn't work.

But I tried a few other directories and the short names didn't work for them either. From the C:\ drive I tried,

cd C:\WINDOW~1 for C:\Windows

and

cd C:\PYTHON~1 for C:\Python27

and I get the same error back, "The system cannot find the path specified." A few gave me "Access is denied" when I tried the actual name, but not the examples above.

This is all on the command line in Windows 7 Home Premium SP1.

What is going on?

"Windows" is only seven characters long and "Python27" is eight. The old MS-DOS file and directory names could be up to eight characters long, with a three character extension if you like. Anything with over an eight character name, or over a three character extension gets a shortened name, unless that feature has been disabled.

Here is exactly what I am looking at,

C:\Program Files (x86)\MySQL\mysql-5.6.17-win32

When I try,

cd C:\PROGRA~2\MYSQL\MYSQL-~1

I get "The system cannot find the path specified". I also tried removing the caps for the last directory, adding a slash on the end, "MYSQL5~1" etc. Nothing.

Type the following two commands, pressing [Enter] after each:
cd /d "c:\program files (x86)\mysql"
dir /x mysql*.*
This should show the shortened name for "mysql-5.6.17-win32" which would be "MYSQL-~1.17-" (assuming there are no other names with almost the same characters).

Yes, that solves the problem. "dir /x" shows the short names for the directories. Type "dir /?" and "cd /?" for explanations on the command options.

Thank you for that.
