It was fine at first, but when you download large files, that virus scanner can go on for a while, and sometimes causes the browser to crash outright.

Does anyone know how to turn the stinking virus scanning off?

Hi,

You need to enter this: about:config into your browser. Then scroll down till you see browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone. This should be set to true. If you double click on it, then it will change to false, then you won't have the problem anymore.

Cheers!

Or you can double click the file in the download manager and it will open the containing folder anyway. I'd rather have the anti-virus...
