My HP 6710b has the annoying habit of shutting down after each Windows 7 update, rather than restarting (as it should!). So, after every update, when a restart is required, it totally powers off forcing a manual power up each time. For specs, it is an HP 6710b business laptop, Centrino duo with 4GB RAM and 1TB HD. Currently running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

However, later I began an upgrade from Win 7 to 10; again, each "restart" was a power off. Thinking the problem may be due to bad memory chips I replaced with a set from another working 6710b; no help.

There does not seem to be a heat problem. As an FYI the laptop I took the memory from is also an HP 6710b and has been running Win 7 Pro 64-bit with no issues.

Would appreciate any help/suggestions. Thanks.

What happens when you do a Start-->Restart, does it still shutdown ?

As a workaround, the next time updates are applied, can you do a start--> restart instead of using the option to restart from within the update window ?

Tristar, many thanks for the prompt reply. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I began an upgrade from 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro; each restart (and there were many! ) had to be done manually as the laptop would shutdown rather than restart.

Now, that I've completed the upgrade, I can do a "start > restart" without it powering off. However, no new updates have come down since the upgrade, so I won't know if the update issue has been resolved by the upgrade until new updates are downloaded.

Thanks!
