Our home desktop has become very sluggish, and sometimes lately it even locks up. There are six people in the house that use the machine, so I am unable to even figure out who may have done what to start the problems. I havent deleted any programs, and believe I have completed all of the required initial steps for posting a help request. Thanks.

Hello again andrsn21.

When you say that six people use this machine, does that mean that each one has their own user account, or do they all log in under the same account? How many user accounts are there total?

Is the only symptom you're noticing that the machine is running slow and sluggish or have there been other reasons to believe there's an infection present?

Have there been any warnings from Microsoft Security Essentials?

Hello Nistlerooy, and thanks for the help.

There are only two use accounts created, and everyone generally logs in under the 'David' user account. We were going to create one for everyone, but just never got around to it.

As far as performance, the biggest issues have been VERY sluggish speeds: for instance, loading web pages to common sites like Yahoo! and FoxNews/CNN/ESPN etc etc. And on a few occasions now, the machine if actually locking up, which ends up needing a hard restart to use the machine again. These problems were non-existant say, six months ago. Now, like just seems that the machine has issues with simple performance.

Thanks again.

Hi again andrsn21.

Are you seeing any other problems, such as Google/Yahoo searches redirecting, errors, pop ups ads, or any other programs not acting correctly?

I see that you have MBAM installed.
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Under the Update tab, click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart your computer.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy/Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

------------------------------------------------------

Let me know if you have any questions or problems with MBAM.

-Taylor

Taylor, thanks for the update. There hasnt been any internet 'redirecting' from websites that I know of, so I would have to say 'no' to that. Heres a copy from the MBAM scan (didnt seem to find anything):

After running the following instructions, please let me know how the machine is behaving.

This tool cleans files from temp locations, and empties the Recycle Bin.
  • Download TFC (Temp File Cleaner) to your desktop, or other location.
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Please goto Download Free Java Software and download Java, and allow it to install on your machine.

--------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

Go here to run an online scanner from ESET and Save the file to your Desktop.
  • If you are not using Internet Explorer, double-click esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to install it, then click 'Run'.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings and ensure these options are ticked:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Next to 'Current scan targets: Operating memory, Local drives', click the Change.. button.
  • Tick all the boxes that correspond to your external/inserted drives.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Copy/paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Let me know if you have any questions or problems.
