My son came home from college and said his laptop is running very slow. I found out his Avast subscription expired and he did not renew it. I ran Malwarebytes and it found over 1200 infections and cleared them. I want to make sure there is no hidden malware left before I look for any other reasons for the slowness. I ran DDS.scr without any problems, but GMER crashed with BSOD. I ran it in safe mode and have attached the results. Here is the DDS report and I have attached the requested files.

Thanks in advance for the help (and yes, I have Avast running again on his computer).

No malware is showing in your logs. We'll do a scan to look for remnants shortly.

Please read the following article: https://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...ning-slow.html

You may need to seek help in one of our other Forums

I see you have P2P software ( BitComet ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall it. You can do so via Control Panel >> Programs and Features.

Free Window Registry Repair

We do not recommend the use of registry cleaners. Our colleague miekiemoes has an excellent writeup here

We suggest uninstalling them via Programs and Features in your Control Panel.

Please uninstall the following via the Programs and Features section of your Control Panel if they still exist:

LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate 3.2 (Symantec Corporation)

Uninstall the following via the Programs and Features Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Programs and Features):

Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

These are all outdated, and security risks by having them installed still.

Leave this one as it has the latest definitions:

Java(TM) 6 Update 20

Going forward, Java will overwrite existing installs, so removing older versions should not be required after this.

When updating in the future, make sure you untick the box next to whatever free program they prompt you to install, unless you want it.

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

In Microsoft Windows Vista, you must open the Web browser via a right-click using the Run as Administrator command.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at any Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected.
  • It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Thanks for the help. I just want to rule out anything malware related before looking for other solutions. I did all you recommended but run into a problem with Kaspersky. When it starts to download program updates, it stays at 0% for a while, then get a message "Launch of the Java application is interrupted! Please establish an uninterrupted Internet connection for work with this program." And yes, I am running as administrator. Any ideas?

It usually works if you try again. Close out your browser and try again.

If still no joy...

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET and Save the file to your Desktop.
  • If you are not using Internet Explorer, double-click esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to install it, then click 'Run'.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings and ensure these options are ticked:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Next to 'Current scan targets: Operating memory, Local drives', click the Change.. button.
  • Tick all the boxes that correspond to your external/inserted drives.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Copy/paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Hello again, Doc. Those are just Spybot backups and aren't active. Does MBAM give a clean log?

Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below into Notepad:

@echo off
if exist "%temp%\log.txt" del "%temp%\log.txt"

for %%g in (

"C:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BugDoctor68.zip"
"C:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BugDoctor69.zip"
"C:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BugDoctor8.zip"
"C:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BugDoctor9.zip"
"C:\Users\All Users\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BugDoctor68.zip"
"C:\Users\All Users\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BugDoctor69.zip"
"C:\Users\All Users\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BugDoctor8.zip"
"C:\Users\All Users\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BugDoctor9.zip"

) do (
del /a/f/q %%g >nul 2>&1
if exist %%g echo.%%~g>>"%temp%\log.txt"

if exist "%temp%\log.txt" ( start notepad "%temp%\log.txt"
) else echo.Deleted Successfully !!

del %0
Save this Notepad file as fix.bat and choose to Save as type: - All Files then close the Notepad file.
It should look like this:

Double-click on fix.bat to run it.

Tell me what it says in your next reply. Press any key to continue.

Ran the bat file and the cmd window opened and just said press any key to continue.... then opened notepad with the following:

C:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BugDoctor68.zip
C:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BugDoctor69.zip
C:\Users\All Users\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BugDoctor68.zip
C:\Users\All Users\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BugDoctor69.zip

I went to C:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery and the BugDoctor zip files were still there, but not only 68 and 69, but many others, from BugDoctor1.zip to BugDoctor121.zip (inclusive with the numbers). I can just go to the Recovery folders listed above and just delete all the files if you see no problem with that. It seems as though there are no infections detected, so at this point I will start checking on all the steps for a slow computer in your prior post. If you have any other ideas, just let me know, otherwise I guess you can consider this thread closed.

thanks again,

Hello again, Doc. I was afraid that wouldn't work on the Spybot entries. Yes, you can delete all the entries in the Recovery section.

Empty your Recycle Bin if it does not do so automatically.

You might ask for help in one of our other Forums

It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

Also, support is ending for some versions of Windows > https://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...ce-packs?os=xp

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware, or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
    • Green to go
    • Yellow for caution
    • Red to stop
WOT has an add-on available for IE, Firefox, and Chrome.
  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
