My hijack log is listed, following the details of my computer issue.

One day, out of the blue, a few months ago, I realized I was locked out of performing ANY functions that you need administrative access to accomplish. Have no idea how or why this happened. Can't even change my clock on my own computer, and cannot remove any unneeded or undesirable programs, can't access control panel at all, don't even know where it went. It is no longer listed in my start menu at all. I don't know where it went.

I've been putting this off for so long now, cause I've been busy, etc. But this is ridiculous, I need access to my own computer. Lately, my computer has been taking a while to load pages, as well. I performed an error check, and defragmented, but it's not seeming to help. I believe I need to get rid of some harmful programs which somehow got on my computer. Please help!! I can't even figure out how to log in to my administrative account.

From what I remember, when I set this dell computer up, about 2 years ago, I allowed my own personal account to allow me all my administrative duties and abilities, and had a password to login, upon start up, the only other account was a guest account with no pass, and no access to admin. Now, I don't even know how the administrative control was stolen away from me. There was no problem, up until a few months ago. It's my computer and nobody else uses it, it must have been a hacker???

I would appreciate your help in this matter so I can fix my computer back up and not have any more problems, now or in the future. I am not a computer genius, but I'm intelligent enough to handle the information you provide me with correctly and effectively. Thank you, in advance!!! Cheers!

Hi Chill_Chick

Please read this post completely before begining the fix. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Please ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON'T MISS A STEP & PERFORM EVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT ORDER.

===============================================

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt

thanks for responding... I seem to have a problem with the combofix installing the windows recovery console.. I did as u asked and downloaded both to my desktop, then drag and drop the downloaded micro icon onto combo and it did nothing except ask me if I wanted to run the program, which I realized is the actual combofix procedure. I opted out of accepting the continuation of combofix and stopped. Is this normal, am I supposed to carry on with the combofix in order to install the recovery con or is it not working properly? I definitely don't want to perform the repair without knowing the recovery console is installed. What should I do? Thanks..

Hi Chill_Chick

Dont worry you can run combofix, it makes other back ups before running the fix anyway also there shouldn't be any problems with the type of infection you have. Please carry ou my instructions

Please continue as follows:
  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  2. Double click ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

Thank you for the reply, once again. It worked accordingly and installed the recovery console, and I performed the combofix scan. The combofix scan is as follows:

Hi Chill_Chick

Well done that cleaned out a lot

Please read this post completely before begining the fix. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Please ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON'T MISS A STEP & PERFORM EVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT ORDER.

===============================================

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". Click on Continue.The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
      Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

=========================

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at one of the following linksAnswer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

=================

Please Run a scan with HiJackThis and save the log

=================

In your next post, please include fresh logs from:
  • Kaspersky report
  • HiJackThis
Please provide details of any problems you encountered whilst performing the above steps & update us on how the computer behaves now

Okay, so I attempted to download the java u said to download off that site, exactly as u had said; and I thought it was saved to my desktop accordingly. I then deleted the java programs on my computer. While I was there I also got rid of a couple of other things that I didn't need on my computer.. trying also, for the millionth time to remove the Kazaa and Skype which it always seems to not be able to get rid of completely, for some reason. Same thing as usual. Should have never downloaded those dangerous things... Didn't realize how bad it was at that time. I then rebooted and my computer froze up when preparing the desktop. I couldn't make it go back to normal at all, so I rebooted by pressing my computer button. I don't know if that had anything to do with the antivirus being on system scan at startup, that's when everything froze up. Anyways, it was fine when I rebooted, then I attempted to click on the only new desktop icon, which was not the correct java installation which I supposedly had downloaded earlier to my desktop. It could not find the file, but it didn't even have the same name as u listed either, don't know what it was. So I attempted to download it again from same site. It showed up as a text file on my desktop which did nothing when I clicked on it. Eventually, I decided to download the newest version that google provided me with, the website address being: https://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp (version 6 update 7). That worked and it installed it. I then went in as u said and deleted the temporary files in the java control panel. Upon doing that, I went to the kaspersky site, and clicked on the active x panel to install it. But, then it did not do anything, and did not begin downloading the needed files. So, after a little bit, I decided to reboot. At that point, went to kasp again and it worked, it began downloading files. I then went to scan settings, but there was nothing that said "extended". However, everything there was checked and it did include archives, and mail bases. So, I figured it must be ready to go, so I scanned "my computer". I saved the text, and during the scan, I did disable my antivirus program

I have the Kaspersky report here:

So, hopefully we can rid my computer of all these threats now. Just let me know what to do... I hope I didn't make any mistakes with the java. Oh, and thank you for the combofix... got all my Administrative Rights and Full Control Panel back again... How sweet it is.. to be able to control and operate the functions you wish to perform on ur very own computer! It's crazy that I can just lose them, just like that!! What is the reason that they were hidden from me, anyways? Malware? Please give me advice on how to keep my computer safe from these terrible entities, and please let me know if I can rid my computer completely of the Kazaa and the Skype 2.5. Also, at some point recently my computer downloaded the Windows Defender. Should I remove that as well? Does it interfere at all with my CA Security Suite? Or is it useful, on occassion to use? I'm not a computer whiz, obviously.. I'm just learning with every issue I have resolved on my own. This is the first time I am getting help from a computer genius, so I definitely am learning a lot more than I would on my own right now.. So, thank you immensely for your advice and solutions to these huge problems that have plagued my computer of late. I do appreciate it, most definitely! Thanks a bunch!!

Hi Ya Chill_Chick

God love you with the java and kaspersky problems thank you for sticking with it

I will give you a script that will remove Kazaa and the Skype 2.5.
completely as for windows defender it shouldn't interfere and you are pretty well covered with what you have got.

Quote:
What is the reason that they were hidden from me, anyways? Malware?
yep they do that to try and prevent you from removing them

Please follow my instructions carefully and post the resulting log. The other two files that Kaspersky found are in quarantine we will remove them when we are finished

===============================================

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

===============================================

Open notepad and carefully copy/paste all the text in the code box below into it:

Code:

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Little Miss Funk\My Documents\Corel User Files\setup.1.2D0D17.efw

Folder::
C:\Program Files\Skype
C:\Program Files\Kazaa

Save this as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

=================

Please Run a scan with HiJackThis and save the log

=================

In your next post, please include fresh logs from:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • HiJackThis
Please provide details of any problems you encountered whilst performing the above steps & update us on how the computer behaves now

So, just before I did all the things you asked me, my computer froze up when I was on the internet with a couple of pages open... so I restarted it and then did as u asked, no problems with running the combofix. So, let me know what's the next step. By the way, just curious... when one would like to print only a certain part of a website or weblog like this one... How is it u go about doing that? I end up printing way too many pages all the time. How do u know what page number that particular text needed to print is on? Btw, thanks for this amazing help you've been providing me with!! One more question, is there any particular malware that I should be looking out for that is especially common and comes from downloading certain commonly used programs, files, etc? How do u know if something is okay to download onto your system, without being harmful? Is there any way to be prepared or to avoid it? Are toolbars which companies try to get u to download comprised with malware? Just want to avoid these terrible creatures of the internet, and keep my computer safe from hackers. Is CA one of the best security suites out there? I was told a couple years ago by a best buy associate that it was one of the best at that time. But, how does it rate now? By the way, whenever I ran the combofix, I turned off everything in my security suite, from firewall, to spyware, to antivirus. Is all of that necessary to turnoff while you run it? Can any virus, hackers, etc get inside my computer during that short period while it is off, or is that more than unlikely to happen? Sorry if I'm overloading you with too many questions..they've just all been running through my mind when I've been perforning these repairs. Thanks again...Cheers!!

Did I mess up and not include the Kazaa in my copy/paste? I noticed only the Skype and other was removed, not the Kazaa. Was that my mistake? Shall I perform that procedure again? What is the full code to paste to perform that function? Sorry, must have been "my bad".... I thought I copied the whole thing.. but, I didn't notice it come up when combofix was performing the repairs, just the other two. Kazaa still won't come off, but I was able to remove Skype from my programs list..

  • In Internet Explorer right click on the page and choose Print Preview
    Find the page number(s) you need and click on the Printer icon at the top left hand corner of the page
    From there choose the pages you want to print

Download this program to remove Kazza KazzaaBegone
  • Save it to your desktop and unzip it there
    Click on search & Destroy all installed compononts
    Click GO
    You may have to reinstall Kazzaa first

Yep it is as good as the others that are on the go. Below you will find links to read that will answer your other questions better than I can

=================

The following procedure will clear out the tools we've used as well as the backups and quarantines created by the fix. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste, or type the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

McAfee Site Advisor--free version. The folks there check out websites and based on their findings, rate it as Safe, Unknown, Caution, or Bad.

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.
  • It will block any bad ActiveX from running in Internet Explorer and Firefox if it's listed in their database (which you should update frequently). To view their database and list of restricted sites, launch the program and click on each of the tabs on the main display page.

IESpyAD Zoned Out to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system as it basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Update, and scan with your onboard Anti Malware and Anti Virus programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?

HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein
MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

-----------------------------------------------------

Follow the list above and the potential for infection will reduce dramatically.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

I'm trying to zap and destroyed. It said it removed all components. However, Kazaa 3.2.6 is still there. Rebooted my computer and still there. You said I might have to reinstall Kazaa to get rid of it. So, which version will download and reinstall that Kazaa, in order to search and destroy it for good? I noticed when running Kazaabegone that it said that it only is able to destroy certain versions of Kazaa, so I just don't want to make the mistake of downloading one that it cannot then fully remove. Thanks, again.. If you could provide me with a link, that would be great!!!

You say it is still there not sure what you mean

Create an uninstall list:

With HiJackThis still open
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List from the notepad file into your post

There are no entries to Kazaa in your registry so I would like to see the above list

How is your PC running otherwise

Hey ya,

Well, I meant that when I go into the control panel, the Kazaa still remains and everytime I try to remove it from there, there is an error. First, a box pops up, entitled InstallShield Wizard, It says setup has experienced an error. It says I should close all windows, etc. But, that is not the problem, it says that every time I have tried to remove it. It also states Error Code -5001. It has been saying that for a long time. I don't even know where it is on my computer, I don't say it. However, the control panel tells me it's still there. So, what to do??

I did as u asked about the uninstall list from hijack this and here it is:

Hi Chill_Chick

Although the entry for Kazaa is still Add/Remove it is actually gone from your system the entry is just stuck there
  • Please open HiJackThis
  • Click on the button at the bottom Main menu
  • Choose Open the Misc tools section
  • Choose Open Uninstall manager
  • Highlight Kazaa entry and click on Delete this entry

===============================================

If you have not done so already, please enable the viewing of Hidden files
From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options> View tab.
  • Tick - Show hidden files and folder
  • Untick - Hide file extensions for known types
  • Untick - Hide protected operating system files
Click Yes to confirm & then click OK

===============================================

Using 'My Computer', navigate to and delete the following Folders (If either is present right click and select 'Delete'):

C:\Program Files\Altnet or Kazaa

=================

Hey there!! Sorry for taking so long to respond back but I've been crazy busy, and I just wanted to make sure that my computer was done acting up... However, my computer seems to be a lot healthier within itself.. thanks to YOU But, for some reason, I am continuing to have a lot of problems when using internet explorer.. A whole lot of freezing is occuring while I'm online, and then I try to close the window and it won't close, it's just struggling to do something.. don't know what?? Even when I use the task manager(cntrl alt del)... it refuses to end the task.. and task a good while(like 2+ minutes lately). So, is there something I can do to fix that, so that it stops happening all the time?) And, one more thing, one of the last things you told me to do was to change the settings re: showing my hidden files, etc.. so that I could see if there were any more Kazaa files hidden on my computer.. there were not.. once I used hijack this to delete it completely, it did just that.. so Kazaa is definitely gone now. However, should I change those settings back to where they were before. I'm wondering because when I do a Google search on my toolbar, sometimes those hidden files are coming up in the search and mentions it is a hidden file. My Google search which comes up first with the Google Desktop Results is where that occurs, and many times, those results that are listed under Google Desktop, come up as warped.. the text is half cut off and incomplete, many times.. like there is a glitch or something.. should I just remove the Google Desktop from my programs? Can I remove the Desktop search, and keep the toolbar Google? I think I already had tried to do that in the control panel, and to no avail. This will be the last help I need.. you have helped me tremendously, and I have learned a lot... I really do appreciate your courteous and quick help that you have provided for me.. and I wish you the best in life, and that you have a great and successful year, this year, and every year after.. I definitely will donate to the cause.. your help was definitely exceptional. Thank you so much... Cheers....

Hi ya

Yes you can re-hide files and folders, I am not sure about your internet explorer problems I always use firefox but If you post here https://www.techsupportforum.com/f56/ and tell them that you have just been cleaned from a virus and tell them your problem they will be able to help you. If there is nothing else I will mark this as resolved

Safe surfing
