I have no idea how it happened but lately every time I click the mouse, the first thing that comes up is some scam video about some software that can make me a million dollars in one month. It does not matter what program I click on, Outlook, some saved document, an icon on the desktop, whatever. These videos just pop up from nowhere and it sometimes would take several tries to get to where I want to go.
My pop-up blocker is on so I don't what else to do and would appreciate your help, please.

I downloaded DDS but unable to save it on my desktop. I am getting the following message:

"DDS not meant to run in compatibility Mode. Program will now exit."

I turned off firewall but that did not help.

I have done this exercise before on my old computer (Windows XP) before and had no problems. This is a new hard drive with Windows 8 and it is taking some time to get used to.

Is there any way around this? I am told DDS is not supported on Windows 8.

Thanks

Hello dorcas22,

My name is Tolga and I will assist you with your malware related problems.

Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.

If you haven't already, please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant notification by email, then click Add Subscription.
First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.
Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.
If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.
Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.
Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts.
If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.
Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean.
My native language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.

Now, let's get started, shall we?

=======================================================

Instead of DDS use FRST as described in the following instruction:

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.
If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
Make sure the Addition.txt button is ticked.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Hello Tolga,
Thanks so much for your help.
I have attached the scans and hope that is alright since you specifically say so, rather than posting in the reply.

Hi tekir06,
Unfortunately nothing much has changed. I still get those sales product videos coming up just randomly at the click of the mouse. I hope you still have some trick to fish them out from wherever they are hiding because they are driving me crazy.

Best regards

Hello again,

Ok I understand. Let's move on. Please do the following.

Please download AdwCleaner from here and save it to your desktop.

Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.

Do NOT click the green 'Download' button(if visible).
Click the blue 'Download now @bleepingcomputer' button.
Run AdwCleaner and select Scan
Once the Scan is done, select Cleaning
Once done it will ask to reboot, please allow the reboot.
On reboot, a log will be produced. It can also be found at C:\AdwCleaner\AdwCleaner[S#].txt
Please copy/paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

I just came back to show you the following:
I clicked on a headline in MSN about Johnny Depp and one of those sales videos came up. I copied the url to see if the origin could be traced:

Which browser is this happening in? Does it happen in all browsers? Can you get a screenshot of the opening video and attach that please?

So far this evening it hasn't happened again. I use mainly Firefox and Google Chrome and it was happening with both browsers plus I was seeing it more often with Outlook. I keep my fingers crossed and will report back again in the morning.

Thanks so much

I'm glad to hear that. We're done.

Clean up

Please download delfix to your desktop.

  • Close all other programs and start delfix.
  • Right-click on delfix.exe and select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • Ensure Remove disinfection tools is ticked. Also tick: Create registry backup, Purge system restore
  • Click Run
  • delfix will now delete all found traces of our removal process.

Note: The program will run for a few moments and then notepad will open with a log. No need to post this log.

=========================================================

MICROSOFT UPDATES

It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System. Another essential is to keep your computer updated with the latest operating system patches and security fixes. Windows Updates are constantly being revised to combat the newest hacks and threats, Microsoft releases security updates that help keep your computer from becoming vulnerable. It is best if you have these set to download automatically.

Turn ON Automatic Updates in Windows 8.1

------------------------------------------------------

Make sure you backup your system, so possible reformatting in the future isn't necessary:

Backup and Restore - Microsoft Windows

------------------------------------------------------

PREVENTION

Please read the article below which will give you a few suggestions for how to minimise your chances of getting another infection.

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware, or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
    • Green to go
    • Yellow for caution
    • Red to stop

WOT has an add-on available for IE, Firefox, and Chrome.
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows 8 here

Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
