Hi Gurus,

Thanks for your awesome service...
I've stupidly installed Antivirus XP and can't cleanse my PC. (SO dumb of me)
When following through your 5 Steps before Posting Log document I couldn't run the Panda scan. When attempting to register with Panda an error page always comes up. I've tried for 3 days now with no luck; I decided to complete the rest of the steps and see what you say. Here's my log, and thanks again:

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Also...

Please go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following, then press Enter:

C:\QooBox\Add-Remove Programs.txt

A text file should open. Please post the contents of that file in your next reply.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

I want to tell you that I renewed my Norton 360 Subscription and the Antivirus XP program is not on my desktop now. The last thing I mean to do is waste your time so I wanted to let you know this now; but I've felt very assured in my PC's safety from following all the processes you have prescribed me thus far, and also I don't have a clue whether this malware is still in my system or not so this is why I'm proceeding. I just wanted to be up front in notifying you there's been a change the last couple of days instead of saying nothing. Thanks again!

Hi jwdrums0 -

Thanks for letting me know. It's good you've updated your AntiVirus subscription. As you can see ComboFix removed quite a bit of nasty junk, including AntiVirus XP related items.

We have more work to do. Stay with me till I give you the All Clear.

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • On the page you'll find a "Browse" button.
  • Next to the browse button you'll see a box to enter text.
  • Please copy/paste the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\4.tmp

  • Then click the "Send File " button just below.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

Hi sir,

Thanks very much. I really appreciate you seeing me through this :)

Well, the scan was quick, unless I did something wrong:

0 bytes size received / Se ha recibido un archivo vacio

That usually means it's malware, and it is blocking access to be read. It's clearly not a 0 byte file in the log. We shall remove it, and it's kin.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1. P2P - I see you have P2P software ( BitTorrent 6.0 ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here,
    here and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs. If you choose not to remove it, please do not use it while we're working together.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  2. Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    Quote:
    https://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/hijackthis-log-help/286702-help-remove-antivirus-xp.html#post1685730

    O1 - Hosts: 66.98.136.25 auto.search.msn.es

    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - https://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredits/menusearch.jhtml?p=zkzed006YYAU_zkxdm011yyau
    Collect::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\4.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\3.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\23B.tmp

    Save this as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

  4. Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  5. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When ComboFix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK. A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.
  6. Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled. A reboot should have done this.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  7. Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, could you highlight or put into a quote box the infected AntiVirus XP files that CF is quarantining please? Just regarding your post two messages ago when you said I can see CF has already cleaned out many nasties incl AV xp files, I couldn't actually decipher which ones were related..just curious is all. Thank you again !

Good job, Joe. Thanks for uploading the file.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Place a check next to the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O1 - Hosts: 66.98.136.25 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 66.98.136.25 auto.search.msn.es
O1 - Hosts: 66.98.136.25 pagead2.googlesyndication.com

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan[
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic and also let me know how things are now.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

As for how my PC's going, I can't tell any difference in performance, but it's definitely not bad...should I be able to report more than this?

(I gotta get some shut-eye now, got to work in a few hours...I'll return in 12 hours time. Thanks very much for all this help- I'm amazed and grateful that we're getting so far into these files.)

These two items found are reported as adware, they should be deleted:

"C:\Documents and Settings\Joseph\My Documents\Melly\music.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Screensaver Installer.exe"

The other items found are in ComboFix quarantine, and will be removed by uninstalling ComboFix as instructed below.

Other than that, your logs appear clean.

Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.

Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and look into the following free programs:
  • Microsoft Windows Update - https://www.windowsupdate.com
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • Winpatrol

Winpatrol is heuristic protection program, meaning it looks for patterns in codes that work like malware. It also takes a snapshot of your system's critical resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without you knowing. You can read more about Winpatrol's features here.

You can get a free copy of Winpatrol or use the Plus version for more features.

You can read Winpatrol's FAQ if you run into problems.

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

Do not install more than one AntiVirus program because they will conflict with each other.

  • FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

Scan here https://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • https://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or https://www.miranda-im.com ? Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • https://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • https://java.com/en/index.jsp - Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • https://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP//Vista. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

Dear TetonBob,

Everything's looking good now; I've completed all tasks and installed all software you've recommended. I just have a quick query re: Firewall and Antivirus products for my PC. What I've paid for is the Norton 360 bundle; now I'm one of those end users who just pays their money and naievely expects the product to take care of things. I see a mention of Firewall Protection with this Norton I have, is that adequate? Does this mean if I were to acquire another firewall product it would have an effect on my PC's performance?

By the way I'm very impressed with the impact of WinPatrol and NTRegOpt on my system, thanks very much!

Hi Joe -

Yes, Norton 360 incorporates firewall technology. So, if you're using Norton 360, you should not install another software firewall. To do so may cause system conflict.

I'm glad to have helped.

OK gotcha.

Thanks a million for taking me through this process so thoroughly. I've learned a lot about security and my data, and I never otherwise would have come to know about all these programs you've directed me to utilise to reduce my system's vulnerability. I really appreciate your excellent service. Thanks again!!
