Hi,

Any help here would be much appreciated.

A friend has asked me to take a look at their PC after a new new anti-virus program appeared and started asking him to pay for it.

Windows XP Home SP 3, Multiple user accounts, Macafee was installed but doesn't run now.

Booting into windows normally the background is overlayed with a message stating "YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED", then "Antivirus 2010" starts up. Some browser sessions seem to be redirected too.
Stopped these appearing by disabling some questionable entries in MSConfig, but this only a part of the problem.

Tried booting in Safemode, Background OK & Antivirus 2010 did not run (before MSConfig changes). PC does not seem to be behaving badly in safe mode and no obvious processes are running.

Installed MalwareBytes & Spybot initially, when trying to run either, the apps start but once scanning starts the applications are terminated quickly. Once terminated the file permissions are changed blocking access to run the application again. HijackThis behaves the same.

I managed to get Panda Active scan to complete a quick scan and it found: Tracking application:pskill.exe and Virus:TrjCI.A

Not sure what to try next so I've worked through your guide...

I ran DDS.scr and the logs are embedded and attached as suggested.
GMER would not run initially renamed and tried again. log attached.

I'm posting this from a clean PC and can get a windows disk if required.

The dds & gmer tests were run in normal (not safe) mode.

Thanks for your time...

p.s. I've taken a full backup but only after infection already on PC.

Hi,

The PC appears to have a case of the Trojan.Alureon, among other things. I've managed to get it to a system restore and its a little more stable to the point that I can now run scanners without the process being killed.

There is a driver [email protected] which is not being detected but appears odd...

I've ran MalwareBytes, Macafee (already installed), Spybot.

Any suggestions?

Hello -

As you've now performed a System Restore, I'd like to see new logs from DDS. Please refrain from any self-help while we're working together now. Thanks.

In addition to a new set of DDS logs, please run this rootkit scanner, in place of gmer.

Scan With RootKitUnHooker
  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Hi tetonbob,
Thanks for the assistance.
Ran DDS again, please see attached Latest.zip.
Ran RootKitUnHooker see report pasted below.
I'll kept it disconnected and not run anything else for the moment.
I have image backups from about the time of the original post and again earlier today.
Thanks, Lee.

Download and run HAMeb_check.exe
Post the contents of the resulting log.

Also...

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • On the page you'll find a "Browse" button.
  • Click on the Browse button.
  • In the Choose File to Upload window which opens, copy and paste this into the File Name box.

    c:\windows\system32\drivers\[email protected]

  • Next, click the Open button.
  • Then click the "Send File " button just below.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • If you get a message saying File has already been analyzed: click Reanalyze file now
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the link to the results page in your next reply.

I'm not near the PC at the moment so can't run HAMeb_check yet.

I have a image backup of the problem PC on with me and have loaded [email protected] from that to VirusTotal using a clean (I hope) PC and the result is 0/43 (0.0%).

On the same infected image there is a file asc3550.sys (c:\windows\system32\drivers\asc3550.sys) the Clean PC I am using to do the upload on has detected the asc3550.sys as a virus "Backdoor.Tidserv.I!inf"

I'll post the HAMeb_check later today.

Thanks.

I'd rather have information from the live affected machine than stored images.

Hi tetonbob,

I reconnected the infected PC to the internet and tried to upload [email protected] to VirusTotal but it would not work. I got to VirusTotal but upload failed twice, can't get back onto virustotal site at the moment.

Ok, Ha11y, thanks for the input.

Let's do this:
  • Download TDSSKiller.zip and extract TDSSKiller.exe to your desktop
  • Execute TDSSKiller.exe by doubleclicking on it.
  • Press Start Scan
  • If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected (it should be by default)
  • Click Continue then click Reboot now
  • Once complete, a log will be produced at the root drive which is typically C:\

    For example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_24.07.2010_13.10.52_log.txt
  • Attach that log, please.

=================

Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe and save it to your desktop.
Close out all other open programs and windows.
Double click the file to run it and follow any prompts.
If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

*In the event the tool does not detect an mbr infection and completes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

mbr -f

Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

**Important note to Dell users - fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not allow the tool to execute mbr -f nor execute the command manually, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).

Hi tetonbob,

The latest attempts didn't go exactly as planned, think I did it as intended.
TDSSKiller ran OK nothing to report, log attached.
First pass on Mebroot semed to go OK didn't ask to run mbr.
Ran mbr -f myself
Rebooted
helpasst -mbrt would not run, couldn't find helpasst.
I extracted the contents of the HelpAss_Mebroot_fix.exe to a folder and ran helpasst -mbrt but it didn't open a log file automatically but found the attached one in c:\

Thanks

Hi Ha11y -

I see you have Malwarebytes' AntiMalware installed.

Please update it's definitions, and run a new Quick Scan.
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Antimalware
  • On the updates tab, click on Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will begin. Once the update is complete..
  • Click on the Scanner tab. Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Save it to your desktop. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware may require a reboot to complete removals. After a reboot, if required, post that saved log in your next reply.

Hi tetonbob,
I can get onto VirusTotal now, uploaded [email protected] and it is clean.
Could system restore have renamed it to that if the infected version was locked as asc3550.sys?
I renamed asc3550.sys and it rebooted OK so deleted it leaving the clean [email protected] in place.
Thanks.

Um, you were going to refrain from any self help. I take it you no longer require my assistance.

No, Sorry all help is greatly appreciated. Didn't think that one would affect what you were doing. That file had shown up earlier as infected when I tried to upload via other pc. I said exactly what I have done & can revert that change if required.

What do you suggest I do next?

Well, there's some oddities with the "clean" file as you noted. What made it appear with a [email protected] extension, what changed the ImagePath of the service listed in the ComboFix log. Something backed it up and changed the registry, but I'm unsure of what, as I've not seen that extension before. As the machine is stable and boots with the change, I'm tempted to leave it alone, but it seems to me if the [email protected] file is a real copy and is clean, the file should be renamed to .sys and the ImagePath edited to reflect that. We can take care of that a bit later.

I have no reason to doubt your findings, but when I'm helping, I like to view the findings myself, is all. If you're confident the deleted file was infected, and the [email protected] file is clean and legit, let's set that aside for now and make sure there's no other malware lingering. But first...

One thing we can do with the [email protected] file is take a closer look.

Please upload it here:

Also, I'd like to check the registry more completely, so we can effect change for that driver if needed.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it. (Vista users, right click, Run As Administrator)
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code:

    :regfind
    asc3550
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found at on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

After you do that, please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic and also let me know how things are now.

Hi tetonbob,
Thanks for the time and effort you are putting into this. I understand you need to be in control of the changes and you don't want me messsing with the process.
I am confident the asc3550.sys was infected and was concerend it was getting loaded by some other means. Does the SystemLook log show Explorer would have been loading asc3550.sys?
The system seems to be behaving pretty well now, doesn't seem too sluggish and IE seems to be loading with no redirects. Though IE seems to require a forced refresh to display new content e.g. Opening IE and going to this topic didn't display your latest reply without forcing page refresh.
I've uploaded [email protected] to Bleeping.
On Eset I must have left Remove checked, think other settings were as directed.
Macafee (already installed) had a popup Scheduled Scan Complete: 1 Threat: RemAdm-PSKill Files affected:
C:\Windows\RESTORE.ins
C:\Windows\system\RESTORE.ins
Clicked remove but it was unable to delete
Thanks
