Hi there,

I don't usually have virus problems but yesterday managed to get the super-annoying "Vista Guardian 2010" all over my computer. I followed some tips and ran AVG, and Spybot and it seemed to have got rid of it.

hxxp://www.myantispyware.com/2010/01/28/how-to-remove-vista-antispyware-2010-vista-antivirus-2010-vista-guardian/ - that's the actual instructions I followed.

Thing is, now I've got this intensely annoying issue with my Firefox link (and IE link, if I choose for that to be there) on start menu. It just doesn't work, and every time I click I just get an error message saying "explorer.exe application not found" then it asks me if I want to remove the non-working link. I tried setting the associations again in Default Program and have searched the internet for tips, but can't seem to beat it. Also tried some an .exe fix file but no luck. As far as I can tell, nothing else is affected, but I don't have a clue if it's still infected or my laptop is just wounded now.

Any help would be much appreciated. Oh, and I don't have access to a boot disk or Windows disc.

Here is the DDS log and attachments..

That should be the cause of the problem. I'd like to see a cross-check with another registry search tool

Download & extract this file to it's own folder - Registry Search

Launch Registry Search
In the search box, enter

av.exe

& click "Ok".
Notepad will open with some text in it (the file will also be saved in the program's folder as well).
Post this text in your next reply

Copy and paste the following into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00):

Quote:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet\FIREFOX.EXE\shell\open\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Mozilla Firefox\\firefox.exe"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet\FIREFOX.EXE\shell\safemode\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Mozilla Firefox\\firefox.exe\" -safe-mode"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet\IEXPLORE.EXE\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\IEXPLORE.EXE\""

Save the file as "fix.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. It should look like this:

Close Notepad.

Right click on the fix.reg file and select Run As Administrator. Choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me know how that goes.

Great.

Some other things to take care of while you're here.

Is AVG fully functional? I see some references to it in the logs, but not as much as I should. Is there an active AntiVirus installed on this machine?

=================

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 18 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says JDK 6 Update 18 (JDK or JRE)
  • Click the Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u18 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser..
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, click on Uninstall a Program and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java(TM) 6) in the name.

    Java(TM) 6 Update 12
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

  • Click the Uninstall button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Adobe Reader 8.2.0 is also outdated, and therefore subject to exploit. You can get the new Reader here

https://get.adobe.com/reader/

Be mindful of the extras such as Google Toolbar, McAfee Security Scan or Norton Security scan checked by default. Unless you want these, uncheck them before installing.

Post new logs from DDS and let me know how things are.
